Should You Wear Underwear When You Workout?

Gym wear is a popular conversation topic these days. Beyond the conversation of yoga pants versus shorts or t-shirts compared to tanks, you have another choice to make: your underwear. It's a matter of preference, right? You may have heard some people say they don't wear underwear when they work out.

According to health experts, you definitely should be wearing underwear when you exercise, whether you're at the gym, fitness center, running, riding your bike, or doing anything else. When you're working out, wearing underwear with adequate support is a must. This means going "commando" or in loose boxer shorts is out. For one thing, the revealing nature of gym shorts can't be ignored. You may find yourself quite embarrassed if you don't cover yourself up properly. Beyond this, supportive underwear serves a very practical purpose while working out. Underwear that conforms to your body allows for a fuller range of movement and prevents seams from riding up uncomfortably.

It's not just about style or even modesty. The reason doctors want you to wear underwear is because it has a big impact on your health. Most people, both men and women, sweat to some degree while working out. Bacteria and yeast thrive in warm environments, like in between your legs. Wearing form-fitting underwear offers another layer to catch all of the sweat or wetness associated with your workout routine. You may experience discomfort from excessive perspiration while exercising if you don't have underwear on. Some people also experience a little incontinence while exercising. Having an extra layer of clothing will help you feel cleaner and not so worried anyone will notice.

This can lead to jock itch, a red, itchy rash that may be shaped like a ring. Jock itch is a fungal infection found in warm and moist areas of the body. The rash often affects the groin and inner thighs. Adding a little baby powder in your workout bottoms may help, but wearing better underwear is much more helpful.

All of this isn't to say that any underwear will work well. While underwear is better than no underwear, you do need to be choosy about the pair you wear. The material matters! Cotton and bamboo are considered the most exercise-friendly material to wear while working out. That is because these materials are both breathable and very lightweight. Silk or satin underwear will rub and cause irritation.
